Why now
Education has always been slow, expensive, and shaped for the average student rather than the one in front of you. For most of the last century that was survivable. You spent four years getting a credential, and the credential stayed roughly true for a career. That deal has quietly stopped paying out.
Two things changed at once. The cost of the traditional path kept climbing, so families now borrow against decades of future income for something employers trust a little less every year. And AI started rewriting what is worth knowing on a timescale measured in months, not decades. In a world moving this fast, the ability to learn something new, quickly and well, is the ultimate skill — and it is the one thing school is least designed to teach.
None of this is the fault of teachers. It is the shape of the system they were handed: fixed pace, fixed content, fixed calendar. Meanwhile the technology that makes genuinely personalized learning possible already works. It is just locked inside closed, expensive systems that teach one curriculum from one content library. We think that capability belongs in the open, at a price a family can actually carry. Education shouldn’t delay your life — it should accelerate it.
The loop in depth
The core idea is to unbundle not just the degree, but even the course. You should be able to dive into the specific topic, subtopic, or skill you need, learn that piece, then branch off — as often as you like, for as long as you like. That is one loop, and you run it whenever you need something.
1. Choose a topic
Start anywhere. A skill you need for work on Monday. A concept that blocked you in a course three years ago. A question you cannot shake. You are not enrolling in a program and you are not committing to a semester — you are naming one thing you want to understand, and the system takes it from there.
2. We surface the best existing resource
The internet already explains almost everything, often brilliantly and often for free. Remaking all of it would be wasteful and worse. So instead of building a walled content library, we find the best thing that already exists for your topic and your level: a video, a chapter of a course, a book section, an open module. The best teacher of a topic is rarely the one who happens to work for us, and we would rather send you to them than keep you inside.
3. Learn it fast with an AI guide
An AI guide goes through the material with you. It sets up what you are about to see, answers the question you have halfway through instead of at the end, explains the sticky part a second and third way, and cuts out the fluff you already know. If you want the video at two or three times speed, take it at two or three times speed — the guide is there to catch what you miss. Read it, watch it, or listen to it; the guide works the same way in all three.
4. Prove it with a short assessment
Finishing a video is not the same as knowing something, so each topic ends with a short assessment: a handful of questions or a small task that only makes sense if the idea landed. Pass it and the topic is marked mastered. Miss it and the guide knows exactly which part to go back over, which usually takes minutes rather than another full pass. What you demonstrate becomes a record you own.
5. Get the next best thing
Mastering a topic changes what is now within reach. Your knowledge graph updates and hands you the next best thing to learn — the topic that is genuinely reachable from where you now stand and that moves you fastest toward what you said you wanted. Take it, or branch off somewhere else entirely. The loop starts again.
The knowledge graph and mastery
Behind the loop is a map of how topics depend on one another. Trigonometry sits on top of a handful of ideas from geometry and algebra; reading a balance sheet sits on top of a few ideas about how a business actually moves money. Most people who feel stupid in a subject are not stupid — they are missing one or two prerequisites from years ago that nobody ever went back for.

So we start with a diagnostic that finds your frontier: the honest edge between what you already know cold and what you do not know yet. It is short, it adapts as you answer, and its only purpose is to stop you from sitting through explanations of things you understood in the first thirty seconds.
From that frontier, the graph picks the most efficient next topic — the one that unlocks the most of what you actually want, given what you have already proven. And because knowledge fades, mastered topics come back for brief spaced review at the point you are about to lose them, which costs a couple of minutes and saves relearning the whole thing.
The unit of progress here is mastery, not seat time. Nobody is promoted because a semester ended, and nobody is held back because the calendar says so. You move when you can show you know it.
Teaching as the final level of mastery
The last level of understanding something is being able to teach it. Explaining an idea out loud, to a real person who is confused in a way you were confused about a week ago, exposes every soft spot in what you thought you knew.
It also happens to make a much better tutor than you would expect. An expert is just one step beyond the person they’re teaching. Someone who mastered a topic recently remembers exactly where it was hard, uses the words a beginner uses, and does not skip the step that everyone skips. So the person one rung ahead of you is often the best possible help — and on DIY Degree, teaching what you just learned is how you prove you have finished learning it.
When you’re stuck
Being stuck is where learning dies. Not because the concept is too hard, but because help arrives too late — at the next class, the next appointment, the next week. The plan is four layers of support, escalating only as far as your question actually needs.
- Your AI guide. Instant and included. It explains the idea another way, and a third way, and works a similar problem with you. Most questions never need to go past this.
- Peer tutors. Learners who mastered this exact topic recently, helping the people right behind them — and earning credit toward their own learning while they do it.
- Expert tutors. Five, ten, or fifteen minutes with someone who knows it cold. Long enough to unblock you, short enough to afford, and matched to your specific problem rather than a general subject.
- Mentors. Longer-term guidance for a bigger goal, on a monthly basis: someone who helps you choose the path, keeps you honest about progress, and knows what the thing you are aiming at actually requires.
The escalation matters as much as the layers. Nobody should lose a week to something a five-minute conversation would fix, and nobody should have to book an hour to ask one question.
Voice-first and multimodal
Learning should fit the twenty minutes you actually have. A lot of that time is spent walking the dog, driving to work, doing the dishes, or waiting somewhere — time that is useless for reading and perfectly good for talking.
So the guide is built to work by voice. You can ask it to teach you something on a walk, argue with its explanation at a red light, and have it quiz you on the way home. When you get back to a screen, the same session is there in text, with the video or the chapter it was working from. Switch between the guide and the content, and between reading, watching, and listening, without losing your place or repeating yourself.
Open content
Open is the part we are least willing to compromise on. Any topic, not a fixed curriculum. The best resources from anywhere, not a single company’s library. An open marketplace where whoever teaches a thing best is the one who gets surfaced.

When a community keeps refining the explanation of a topic, that explanation gets better than anything a single publisher would ship, and it stays free.
The directory is the visible, working start of this: an open catalog of platforms, subjects, standards, and regulators that anyone can browse today.
For parents
If your kid is learning here, you should be able to see it and shape it without hovering over their shoulder. The plan gives parents four controls that matter.
- Budgets. Set what can be spent on tutoring and mentoring, so a kid can get real help without anyone worrying about the bill.
- Content filters. Decide what is in scope for your family, at the topic level, rather than trusting a rating on the whole platform.
- Mentor selection. Choose the adults who guide your child, and see the ratings and outcomes behind them.
- Progress you can see. A live picture of what has been mastered, what is being worked on, and where they are stuck — available on a Tuesday, not at the next conference.

That record — specific, demonstrated, and always current — is our alternative to a diploma. A degree certifies that you were present for four years. This certifies what you can do, topic by topic, and it keeps growing for the rest of your life.

Everything above depends on great teachers, and great teachers should get paid. The marketplace is where course providers, creators, teachers, tutors, and mentors offer what they teach, and where learners meet them at the exact moment they need it — not after a month of searching, and not after being sold to. AI isn’t here to replace teachers. It’s here to put them in front of the right learner at the right minute.
What decides who rises is ratings and learning outcomes, not advertising spend. If your explanation of a topic is the one that makes it click, that is what surfaces it. And because teaching is the final level of mastery, the path runs both ways: learners become peer tutors, peer tutors become paid experts, and experts become mentors.
